Deborah Branch, Owner of Lil Mama’s kitchen, credits God for sudden buzz and success

Deborah started off as any other kid. She developed a dream from simply watching her surroundings. This so happened to be watching her mother cook some of her favorite meals. For Deborah, cooking gave her a place to escape. After graduating high school she made a firm decision to pursue cooking as a career.

She decided to move from her home town of Gainesville,Fl to attend Daytona State College in 2012. Daytona State College had a great culinary school and it was fairly close. This is where she met her current friend and mentor Andra Chishlom. Andra has had some great success in culinary arts which includes her major roles at Daytona State College, her various news appearances, and her great run in cooking show competitions. Deborah gives Andra much respect for all the help and promotion she has given her throughout her career. Deborah graduated from DSC in 2014.

In 2015 Deborah decided that she wanted to open a restaurant of her own. Her pastor prayed for her and told her that she would be opening a restaurant soon. That was enough motivation for her to pursue it seriously. With the help of her mother and father she was able to find a building that was reasonable for her. Unfortunately, the space was occupied at the time. Yet, something filled her spirits about the place and she prayed over it as if it was already hers. About a week later she saw that people were moving things out of the place. She immediately called the realtors and by late 2015 Lil Mama’s Kitchen was born.

The place was in disarray but with her strong team that consisted of her husband, parents, her pastor and her uncle eddie she was able to turn the place around. Strictly from the connections she gained while in Daytona Beach, she was able to have a successful soft opening. There were a lot of great vibes and that’s all Deborah asks for.

“I really just love great vibes and atmosphere. I love to come out and greet people, ask them how they are doing, and engage with them, ya know? I love to uplift people. Be the light to their day. I’m a community person, as well. I just love to help people. I also like to speak inspiration into women. Especially, when it comes to respecting their bodies and being much more than what’s on the surface. Self value, Self Worth, and knowing who you are is the key. I feel like a woman such as myself owning a restaurant inspires them.” – Deborah BranchOwner of Lil Mama’s Kitchen

 

When speaking to Deborah about what dishes brought in the most customers she couldn’t pin point things at first. Then her mothers chitterlings came to mind. She said the chitterlings were a hot item that people frequently requested. She switches it up pretty much every day, though. She has a special for each day she is open. Her focus is soul food.

Cooking wasn’t tough for her. She says that learning the business was difficult.

“This being the first time of me running a business, it was definitely tough at first. I always worked under people but never fully ran a business on my own. Learning how to manage the finances, menu roll outs, learning certain employees….it’s things you don’t really think about until you actual experience it. The advice I have for anyone starting a business for the first time is research, research, research. You can never learn too much. I definitely give credit to God for how things fell in place for me.” 

Though her main success came from her restaurant and cooking, her main goal is to help woman in general. She keeps God first and really thanks her parents, her pastor, her husband, and Andra for all of their help throughout her journey and rise to the top.

Keedie’s Corner was blessed this year to be able to give back to less fortunate individuals at our first annual food drive. The team plans on not only doing this annually but on every occasion where the needy may need a helping hand. We want to thank everyone who donated to the cause, the turn out was great.

We were greatly humbled and blown away by the appreciation from the people who came by to pick up some goods. It’s was a great honor to be able to generate donations from our supporters that we used to bless others with. Once again thanks everyone and shoutout to the Keedie’s Corner staff for putting this all together.

The sweet tale of “QueenBerries”

Keedie’s Corner recently caught up with Nikki Jones to discuss her “QueenBerries”, which are a royal treat among the Central Floridians. She has a delightful twist on strawberry decor and she gave us the opportunity to share her story. Read along as we tell her tale.

Where are you from Ms.Nikki?

  • I’m from a small city called Crescent City.

How long have you lived in the Central Florida area?

  • I’ve lived in the Central Florida area for about 10 years now.

How long have you been making your famous “QueenBerries”?

  • I’ve been making “QueenBerries” for about 4 months now.

And you also make Cocktails?

  • Yes, sweet cocktail jars!

What motivates you to go hard in life?

  • All of my strength comes from the Lord, FIRST & my 5 yr. old daughter Derielle, everything I do is for her!

Do you have anything else in store?

  • I’m always brainstorming ALWAYS! (LoL)

What would you describe as good customer service in your line of work?

  • I’ll just say PATIENCE is a virtue.

How do you balance it all out? School, berries, cocktails and family?

  • GOD! I’m not just saying it in vain sometimes I find myself praying ALL day, I have to give credit to God. It’s easy to step off track or get unbalanced so to speak, when I feel like giving up he reminds me he hasn’t bought me this far to leave me! I have to keep my eyes on the prize!

Do you find yourself eating your creations?

  • Not really, I’ll taste a strawberry to make sure my batch is pretty sweet, but my daughter on the other hand doesn’t get sweets often so she looks forward to mommy messing up a “QueenBerry” so she can eat it!

What do you do in your personal time?

  • I like to shop, spend time with my family & friends, SLEEP!  All my friends & family knows I LOVE to sleep, I’ll take a nap in a quick minute! (LoL)

What are some goals you would like to accomplish?

  • To become a home owner, go back to school, & be happy every single day!

What level of success would you to have to reach to feel accomplished?

  • It’s hard to answer that. I’m a dreamer, a doer, a thinker, I see possibility everywhere, the sky’s the limit for me! Even when I feel accomplished I’ll set another goal to reach! I’m constantly challenging myself & having fun in the process!

What’s the most creative design you have made on your berries?

  • Um that’s kind of hard I’ll say so far the leopard print…or maybe the tuxedos.

What are some of the weirdest request you have received from your customers?

  • Oh my God if only I could share them all! The weirdest/funniest one someone wanted me to draw was a crab on the berries. (LMBO) I’m no artist & my space on the berry is only so big.  Everyone wants to be “different” until it gets ridiculously funny!

• Do you have any shout outs?

  • Of course I would love to give my #1 supporters Latoya Scott (my sister), & Tangela Walker (God-sister)! My mom & dad for always being there no matter what venture I wanted to try, Derielle (my daughter) she’s always giving me ideas, & willing to help her mommy out! My dear friends who I send pictures, ideas, etc to Shala, Falon, Shayla, Nacole, Felicia, Kellee, Derrick, Brittany & my favorite cousin Tangela Williams I love each one of y’all in a very special way!

Any words of wisdom or encouragement? 

  • “Positivity is the KEY honey! Things are going to happen life happens, you can either feel sorry for yourself or treat what has happened as a gift. There’s a blessing in every lesson. Use it as an opportunity to grow or a stumbling block to keep you from growing! Walk in your purpose!”

9 Disgusting Things You Didn’t Know You’ve Been Eating Your Whole Life

Some processed foods are most enjoyable when consumed under a veil of ignorance.Otto Von Bismarck, the politician who allegedly coined the phrase,“If you like laws and sausages, you should never watch either one being made,” knew this all too well.But what about the everyday eats we assumed were safe, like bread, soda and cereal? Even if some of these foods seem innocuous, the fact that we need to pump up our snacks with additives speaks volumes about how far from ‘natural’ our food has become. Read below to find out what ingredients are really lurking behind those labels.

  1. Beaver Anal Secretions Listed under “ingredients” as: Castoreum How we consume it: Vanilla-flavored treats Even if castoreum, a liquid found in castor sacs near a beaver’s anus, might not SOUND tasty, it is widely used as a substitute for vanilla flavoring.

Human Hair Listed under “ingredients” as: L-Cysteine How we consume it: Bagels, cakes and more. Believe it or not, this compound made from human hair and/or duck feathers is actually used as a flavor enhancer. L-Cysteine is pretty common, so don’t be surprised if you’ve already eaten some today.

Coal Tar Listed under “ingredients” as: Food coloring. How we consumed it: Almost any artificially-dyed food When manufacturers began making synthetic food coloring nearly 120 years ago,they relied heavily on coal tar (the byproduct of carbonized coal). Although the food industry has mostly phased out this product, the alternative isn’t much better: oil. “Although certifiable color additives have been called coal-tar colors because of their traditional origins, today they are synthesized mainly from raw materials obtained from petroleum,” says the FDA website.

  1. Anti-Freeze Listed under “ingredients” as: Propylene Glycol How we consume it: Salad dressing Propylene glycol is commonly used as an anti-freeze (but less toxic than ethylene glycol, a similar product), and can also be found in salad dressings as a thickening agent.

Flame Retardant Listed under “ingredients” as: Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) How to consume it: Citrus-flavored soda Something called “vegetable oil” might seem unassuming in food production, but the active ingredient, bromine, is widely used as a flame retardant in furniture, and can be toxic. High levels of consumption may be tied to impaired neurological abilities and early onset puberty.

  1. Biodiesel Additive Listed under “ingredients” as: Tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) How to consume it: Chicken nuggets TBHQ is not just gross; it can be highly dangerous, too. The synthetically-created preservative is used in everything from bubble gum to nail polish to cheese crackers. Unfortunately, the stuff is so toxic that just one gram of it could make you ill.

  1. Sand Listed under “ingredients” as: Silicon dioxide How we consume it: Salts, soups and more Silicon dioxide can be added to foods as an anti-clumping agent, and is often used to control humidity. If your soup tastes a little gritty, now you know why.

Jet Fuel Additive Listed under “ingredients” as: Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) How we consume it: Cereal We’ve all been told that antioxidants are good for us, but some are certainly better than others. BHT falls into the “others” group. This antioxidant property helps keep foods fresh for longer. So as long as you are fine with consuming the same chemical compound found in petroleum products, such as jet fuel, your bran flakes can stay crunchy for weeks!

  1. Borax Listed under “ingredients” as: E285 How we consume it: Caviar Borax, the well-known home cleaning agent, can also be found as a food preservative in caviar. Although it is banned from most foods in the U.S., imported caviar preserved with E285 can still be sold here.Clarification: The image originally associated with propylene glycol suggested that it was an anti-freeze commonly used in cars. This chemical is often found as a cooling agent in electronics.
