Black History Month

Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” which was created by Carter G. Woodson in 1926.

Woodson was a noted historian,  scholar, educator and publisher.  The celebration became month-long in 1976, changing the name to “Black History Month”. For observation of the birthdays Fredrick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln, the month of February was chosen.
